M & M in Suriname – Our life with the Wajana indians Home Introduction M & M Mission – cooperating agencies Giving A Brief Summary of the Work of World Team in the Interior of Suriname Kawemhakan & Apetina Project Church Lawa Living in the Jungle M & M in Suriname Our life with the Wajana indians 8 augustus 2016 door info-en-admin Geen reacties A week with a ribbon Monday morning two by two the teenagers came to church. The girls came around nine o’ clock, but when they saw there was nobody, they went away to return later. In all the cultures we know the teenagers all react like this. Nobody wants to be first. The girls come in time and the boys come when they feel it is time. Boys and girls like to sing. it is not always nice to hear, but that’s not important. It is so nice to see these young boys and girls getting the opportunity to grow in their skills. During biblestudy time everybody is willing enough to answer the questions. They shout their answers to the teacher, standing and jumping to get attention. The teachers keep close to the booklets made by Klasien, Anneke and Ilse earlier this year. We plan to teach them to make their own studies next year, God willing. At the end of each morning we have the ‘sword drill’. All teenagers hold their bibles in the air. A verse is asked for. Who finds the text first rises and reads the text out loud. The first one gets a mark on the blackboard. Every morning we close with the finale between the best boy and the best girl. They keep asking for more! Monday also the kids under the age of twelve came to join the party. The leaders felt so sorry to have to send them back home that they decided to also have a childrens club every morning. Talking about improvising! Some childrensworkers from other villages taught about Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel and about Jonah using flash cards. The children also love to sing, so we could hear them from quite a distance. During all these activities the women are cooking a meal on an open fire. That’s hot! Zeven days the women, with the help of some men, prepared enough food to feed well over one hundred mouths. While we are taking a nap in our hammocks, we hear the kids and teenagers already begin to play soccer and volleybal. The heat of the sun doesn’t mind them at all. A lot of adults also play along. It’s been a pleasure watching all the people in the village having fun without drunkeness. A couple of afternoons we have been meeting with the board of the church to learn tHavenweg to keep a good administration of the church funds. They seem to grasp the importance of it, but we figure we need another three to five years to really get it going. It is encouraging to hear one of the leaders in church talking about the importance of a written inheritance. We see the shift from an oral culture to a written culture taking place. It is our priviledge to serve these dear people. Categorie?n: Geen categorie | Permanente link 29 juli 2016 door info-en-admin Geen reacties Busy-ness The last few weeks a lot has happened. First we had an outreach to Kayode, followed by preparations for the coming Youthweek. Last weekend we visited Solonam Pata. Meeting Tukusipan Kayode The days in Kayode were very nice, many people joined the meetings in the tukusipan. Both evenings we showed a part of the movie about the life of King David. We met new people, especially those that were set free from bondage of evil spirits the last few weeks. We were blessed with many believers from Lawa and other villages who came over to Kayode. A warm encouragement for the believers there. Camping together Last weekend we visited Solonam Pata. Also here a large group attended the meetings. Fridaynight a movie about revival among the Natives in Canada, called Transformation was shown. Marco could connect to this movie in his message Saturday morning. We enjoy to see a number of signals in Solonam Pata that show the Lord is building His church. Singing in Solonam Youth in the meeting Childrens meeting We are pleased to see that the system to visit the different villages along the river is back in place. Because of all the business connected to the deliverance ministry the last few months, this was put on hold. Now we have a schedule again to visit the villages on a monthly basis until the end of this year. Counselingtime At Lawa we had a number of meetings with the youth leaders preparing the Youthevent of next week. We worked on a daily schedule: Monday – Saturday, 9-12 am a programme with Bible study and teaching, 12 lunch, 3-6 pm sport and 7 pm praise night and movie night (in turn). We produced some posters that were presented in different villages. We look forward to see how many youth will come over to Lawa for this event. Paperwork Together with the Board of the church we have been planning to have a canoe filled with building materials be brought up the river from Albina. The people are happy with the building activities to expand the church. They see that God is providing the funds needed for such a huge project and praise Him. After the week with the youth we will have a home sale with second hand clothes from the Netherlands. We agreed to raise the prices a bit in order to have some local fundraising for the churchbuilding. Let’s eat We also dicided to send out two elders couples to Apetina again (like we did last year). We hear that there is again a great need to reach out to the church of Apetina. Last year the outreach was a succes. We now are able to combine some flights with MAF from the city in such a way that we can do this without too many extra expenses. We would love to see this kind of ministry develop more. That local leaders are able to reach out to one another connecting and deepening their church relations and their faith and daily walk in Christ. Categorie?n: Geen categorie | Permanente link 13 juli 2016 door info-en-admin 1 reactie Holiday season at Lawa The last couple of weeks we’ve been praying with at least one person a day. This week our schedule is 3 times a day with different people. Some are new, some come back because they sense they’re not completely free yet. July and August are the holiday months. The youth is back in their villages. Last week we had a full church. The first Sunday of the month we celebrate the Lords Supper together will all the believers of the villages along the upper Lawa river. The different groups will go on outreach to their family and friends to encourage them to stay close to Jesus, or to unbelievers to encourage them to invite Jesus in their heart. Yesterday a boy off 16 came to one of the elders because he wanted to accept Jesus in his heart. What a joy in our hearts and in heaven. It is still so special to give them a Bible in their mothertongue: Wajana. During the holiday season there are some sport competitions and other festivities. With the festivities comes the strong drink. Even children under the age of ten sometimes get drunk. Since many times there will be fights when people are drunk, Please pray for protection for the teenagers and others recently set free from demonic manifestations. We pray that they won’t go back to their old life, but stay close to Jesus. Pray that they will not give in to the temptation. Pray for good examples from the parents. Last week there was a boardmeeting of the church. There was one topic that needed to be adressed. The church building is getting too small for their congregation, so they want to extend the church. When it is finished it will be twice as big. They need to start right away because they want at least the roof to be built before the annual conference in November this year. The 8 concrete pillars are constructed, they will support the new to be build extensions of the roof. Now the church is looking for money to buy the tinplates. In total they need 3600 us dollars to finish the pillars and the roof. The believers contribute to the project, but the leaders also asked if we would ask churches in the USA to be willing to support them too. See the project outline:Project Church Building Lawa Please pray with us to find the people our Lord will lead to support this project. The leaders of the Lawa church decided to have a week of Youth ministry July 31 – August 7 for all the young people of the Wayana villages along the river. We have to get started working on the programm together with the youthleaders in the church. Last Spring we began youth ministry in the church which resulteert in a weekly youth gathering. Now we can reach out to the young people during summer holidays. Bible study in the morning, sport activities in the afternoon and music, singing and some movies in the evening. What a blessing to see this development in the Lawa church. Please pray for the right preparations and a week filled with Gods blessings on the youth. That young people May open their hearts to the savatipn of the Lord Jesus and that young lives will be (re)dedicated to the Lord. Categorie?n: Geen categorie | Permanente link 16 juni 2016 door info-en-admin Geen reacties Back in Lawa Due to our schedule of visiting the Paramaribo for a few weeks after our stay in Apetina, we returned to Lawa last week. During the last few weeks the deliverance ministery at Lawa continued. Every day the prayer team was able to help people to be set free from bondage of evil spirits. The Lord is sending people from different villages along the Lawa river to the church at Lawa asking for help. After arriving at Lawa Anneke, Klasien and Ilse informed us about the developments of the last few weeks. When Marco left about 70 people were set free. Now the list had grown above 10. Training materials were developed for youth ministry and many personal stories of the people in the village and along the river were shared. Right after our arrival we joined the next prayer meeting in church. Last weekend was very special since friends from the Netherlands came over to visit us at Lawa. We booked their flight with MAF in order to provide a flight back into town for the three ladies helping to share costs of transportation. Even more ‘special’ became the flight when we noticed 15 minutes before the plane would arrive that a heavy rainshower covered the airstrip with a huge amount of water. While landing, the plane started to aquaplane which made it impossible to stop the plane before the end of the airstrip. The plane with its passengers came to a halt in the bush. Everybody went over to the site to help the passengers get out and later to get the plane back on the strip. At the moment the plane is parked in front of our house. How grateful we are that everyone got out without any injuries. That night the house was filled to the brim. People sleeping in hammocks and on stretchers. Inspite of the accident we had a good time together. That evening we thanked the Lord for his safe keeping in a service in the church. Next day Anneke, llse, Klasien and the pilot went by canoe to Tabiki, since the airstrip was closed because of the rain. We keep on praying according to a schedule of one to three times a day. Keep praying for deliverance of many still to come. Categorie?n: Geen categorie | Permanente link 8 mei 2016 door info-en-admin Geen reacties The battle continues Last week Friday April 29’, Marjolein left Lawa together with the elders from Apetina and Patrick and Nikki from Canada. Marco stayed in Lawa to assist the leaders for the next few weeks. In the mean time we now have been praying now full time for 3 weeks, 4 times a day, in order for people to find deliverance from the evil powers that frighten them day and night. The majority is youth, but also smaller kids and grown-ups call on our assistance. We show them the road of salvation the gospel teaches us. Terms like salvation and deliverance become very clear and practical involved in this ministry. Both for us as team and especially for those who ask for help when in distress. According to our plans Marjolein will fly out of Apetina May 20, together with Patrick and Nikki. I hope to be in the city the same week. Yesterday our daughter Jiska, with her husband and son, flew to Suriname in order to spend their holidays with us and her sister Elisabeth. We look forward to celebrate my birthday May 24’ together in the city. Last Monday Roy Lytle arrived in Lawa. We now work together in praying and talking with the people that ask help. Every day 4 people are scheduled. The week is full while every day one or two are added to the list. We start early in the morning 05:00 AM. Next meeting is 10:00 AM, 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM. Most evenings we enter the house at or after 8:00 PM. We asked Anneke Kempers to come over to Lawa to help out in the weeks that we are in the city. Ilse and Klasien are willing to join her. This would realy be a blessing for the people. Most people get delivered from the evil powers that held them in their grip. Some have to come back for a second or third time. We keep on learning. Many come to Christ, both the children and in many cases also the parents. Next weekend we plan to go down river in order to meet the people that have come to Lawa the last few weeks in order to encourage them to stay close to the Lord. Next week Roy will teach on spiritual war hoping to encourage the leaders to get going with follow up for the people in the church. Categorie?n: Geen categorie | Permanente link 18 april 2016 door info-en-admin 1 reactie Come over and help us This is what the elders of Apetina said to the elders of Lawa last year July. Then 2 elders couples came over to support the leadership of the Apetina church. Since Eastern this year big spiritual problems with a number of teenagers occured along the Lawa river. A team from the Baptist Union came from the city to support the leaders in Lawa. The elders of Apetina also were asked for help. They felt urged to go over and help, but… How can we accomplish such an endevour and who will supply the funds needed? Last year we had a nice opportunity to fly in gasoline with MAF for a reasonable price. Now we knew why. We were able to supply gasoline for the outboardmotor of a canoe and make the trip with a number of elders from Apetina to the church of Lawa. Last week Wednesday we left for a 3 day canoe trip. Friday afternoon 5 pm we arrived in Lawa safe and sound ( with an impression of the wooden seat in our backs and more…). A lot of prayer with a growing number of people is dayly business now in the Lawa church. We joined right after we arrived and are in the process since then. We witness many teenagers getting delivered from the evil powers bothering them. They change into the person God wanted them to be. For our Canadian guests and for us this river trip was quite an experience. The power of the river. The beautiful nature. Learning how to keep sitting on a small piece of wood people call a seat… The elders from Apetina left the village like the disciples did in Luke 9. Get on your way and expect the Lord to provide whatever you will need. Ok, they brought their hammocks and a few pieces of cassave bread, but that was all. They could live on water and cassavebread if need be. They trusted God would take care of them. The first day we enjoyed beforehand prepared anjoemara, the second day a squirrellike ‘meal’ swam by and was naturally caught and cooked. The third day we could buy, cook and eat fish alongside the river. This way God provided a nice meal every day. Very special to experience! The past days we are praying, together with the elders of Lawa, Apetina and a lot of other people, with over 30 teenagers in serious trouble. We see how God is performing miracles in peoples lives. We expect to be in Lawa for a week or two and then return to Apetina by canoe. This all depends on the situation at Lawa at that time. It is special to know that so many people all over the world are praying for the teenagers of this tribe deep in the jungle of South America. Categorie?n: Geen categorie | Permanente link 31 maart 2016 door info-en-admin Geen reacties Easter and more Just before Easter we arrived at Apetina. Last weekend we took part in a beautiful Easter conference. Different groups of people from Palumeu and Solonam pata had come to Apetina in order to join the meetings. We enjoyed seeing Indian leaders encouraging the believers in Apetina. Young leaders from Solonam pata and Palumeu are being used by the Lord to comfort and teach the church in the interior. This is an important part of our mission. We rejoice when we see how God calls leaders to step into this ministry. We are grateful to be able to give a new outboard engine to the leaders of the Apetina church. They need this engine to visit Tutukampu every Sunday, meeting with the new believers there. A Dutch church offered to pay for the engine. We rejoice to see how God binds believers around the world together to fulfill His great commission. The visitors from Palumeu left yesterday with 3 canoes. Several people from Apetina escorted them to cross a number of rapids in order to find their own canoes. The river raised that high that we no longer feel safe (and comfortable) to bathe in the river. We are glad that every day rain gives enough water to use the shower in the bathroom now. Patrick and Nikki Toews arrived last Wednesday. They stay for almost two months as part of a year long investigation how the Lord wants to use them in Mission. They will visit different fields of World Team around the world. We hope to learn a lot from each other in the coming weeks. In 6 villages a party was organised with the theme: ‘Do you want to exchange’? Last January all childrensworkers rehearsed this program.Especially the rehearsal of a small play had its hilarious moments. The Wajana are not accustomed to perform a play. To show emotions is unusual. So it was really a joy to see that the message was understood by the children and by the parents. Do you want to exchange? Handing over your mistakes, faults and frustrations to Jesus and recieve from Him a brand new life. The childrensworkers had beautiful songs chosen to be sung by the children, who did so wholeheartedly. This was followed by the giving away of the shoeboxes of Operation Christmas Child. This was the favorite part of the program for the childrensworkers, being able to hand out a box stuffed with presents to every child in the age of two ‘till forteen. In ten days time we had six celebrations where over 500 boxes were handed out. Previously flown into Lawa by MAF. This month will start the follow up on the celebration in 8 villages: The Most Beautiful Voyage, a 12 week course about the principels of Gods Word. We are so grateful for all the Wajana childrensworkers that are so eager to teach the children of their tribe about Gods love for them. Since these kids go to the French schools, the Surinames Bible Society made an effort to send French copies of The Most Beautiful Voyage. It was also a great joy for Anneke Kempers and Ilse van Dijk to see the growth in faith in the hearts of many Wajana’s. Both ladies are involved with the Wajana’s since the Seventies. They have been teaching about ‘Spiritual warfare’. This is not a new topic, there has been thorough teaching about this before, but now it seemed to land into open hearts. Ilse and Anneke had several sessions with women that wanted to confess their sins and make a clean start in their walk with God. The past 7 months over 100 people were baptized upon their testimony of their faith in the ressurected Lord Jesus Christ. The leaders of the church see a growing spiritual battle in the lives of the teenagers and young believers. Please pray for guidance and discernment of the Holy Spirit as the leaders talk and pray with these people. The week before we went to town Telesur started to build a new telecom tower on the mountain near the village. Soon we hope to get acccess to faster internet providing better ways to connect with family and friends. At the moment we are in town. We look forward to the birth of our grandchild. When this has happened Marjolein wil assist the family for a number of days. A lot took place since then.We enjoyed Christmas with a busy weekend after that. With more than 450 people we celebrated the birth of the Lord Jesus in the village. We enjoyed a number of Church meetings with various speakers, including a number of young leaders from up river. In between lunch was prepared for all visitors. It turned out to become like a big conference. All places in the village where people could stay were occupied. We sheltered three families under the house. Christmas Saturday we planned to have a day of sports and plays. It turned out that although we made preparations with the elders last June, the both of us were expected to lead the entire day. This day was a great success. With 14 teams the people played along in rope pulling, shooting with bow and arrow and canoe race. After Christmas we trained all children workers for the coming events of Operation Christmas Child that are due the coming month. We plan to reach out to more than 500 children along the river. We hope to see the 7 children clubs that are active now grow in numbers. In the end we pray that also the parents will be interested to visit the bible studies and church meetings in the villages. In the beginning of January we flew into the city since Marco traveled to Orlando, Fl, for the annual LEAD meeting of World Team Americas. Marjolein stayed in the city visiting our daughter Elsbeth and her husband Rafael. Elsbeth is expecting her baby in about a month. A big surprise for Elsbeth, we had been involved in, was that our other daughter Jiska came over to Suriname to be with mother and sister for 10 days. Jiska wanted to meet her sister while being pregnant. They had a beautiful week together. It was special that we decided last minute to catch a plane a few days before we had planned before. It turned out that we were just in time to say goodbye to an old friend who was very ill. He passed away in the days we stayed as guests in their home. We were able to comfort and assist his wife and the closest family. The weekend before we returned to the bush we celebrated Marjoleins birthday. Very nice to be able to do this with family and friends. At the moment we are back in Lawa. Now we are with Anneke Kempers and Ilse van Dijk. They will help us with all the children celebration activities. The coming weeks our plates will be full again. We plan to fly back to the city in the end of February in order for Marjolein to be with Elsbeth right after giving birth.
